Every single startup today wants to “revolutionise X”, “disrupt Y”, or “democratise access to Z”. Whether it’s through healthTech devices, innovations in agriculture, emissions-saving technologies, or even simple accounting software, all entrepreneurs have big claims on how they are impacting the world. But are they really? And how do they know their net impact is positive rather than negative? In a market full of “move fast and break things” and fiascos like FTX, WeWork, or Theranos, we should all be questioning any self-proclaimed changemakers. This talk will review the good, the bad, and the ugly in the “changing the world” category and will make some practical suggestions to entrepreneurs on how to achieve positive impact, or at least how to avoid major harm.
